Hi Me Ro Me by Allison James

0960_0200_ItchioHeader.png

Hi, Japan. A futuristic city where the lights are so bright they dazzle the blind. In comes Me Ro Me, a thrill-seeking Russian looking to scale Hi's tallest building, a winding tower with a tough electric security scanner constantly rotating around its cylindrical outside. Go high or go die.

This was an entry into GMC Jam #10, where it placed 6th.

The original dev log from the now-defunct GMC:

Saturday
1:01: Minute delay due to having to update topic! Aaargh! GO!
1:04: Things are happening! Magic is occurring!
1:11: Right. Ultra-basic platforming engine sorted. It's glitchy, but it works for now. I'll fix it later.
1:13: Time to tackle the problem head-on: how do I make my head-pictures turn into game-stuff? Couldn't do it when I made mMm, THIS TIME IT'S HAPPENING.
1:13: Also, I'm going with the name "Tojing Thunder" for now. Like the ring to it. But it'll probably change.
1:14: Goddammit I miss having Fireworks. Going to have to find something free, no time to get Fireworks back!
1:36: Holy Christ, I almost have it! This took me hours to fail to do before. Thank-you, experience.
1:49: Oh yes. Something to show after half an hour of semi-intense geometry. Player sprite may or may not be Google Images-ed for now. WIP Screenshot 1
1:55 It's looking nice but playing like a dog. However, I think I'll sleep and put some proper work into it tomorrow.
10:35 Resume!
11:24 Had to do a few updates to new laptop, but it's on again!
12:07 Got the engine up to a respectable enough level of functioning, so will do a video shortly!
12:43 Changed colouring of game - background is grey, centre tower is white. Threats will be yellow.
13:09 Added first threat - a mMm-like wall with one twist - it can kill you if you move too far around it now too!
13:10 Crappy internet in kitchen means video is taking a while, and is now outdated
13:21 Going to go outside for a bit and enjoy this rare Dundee sun Here's another screenie and the first video. WIP Screenshot 2 | WIP Video 1
14:49 Resuming after a bit of path cleaning around the house and sun enjoyment.
15:02 Now decided on the name "Hi Me Ro Me" for the game because in Katakana it looks like an angry person flipping the bird.
15:10 Added a little bit of HUD.
16:03 Been playing with art and music, here's a new video though! WIP Video 2
16:35 Played with the graphics a bit. New screenie!
16:46 Animation is a lot more fluid now. Added some extra graphical stuff again as well. Also toying with music, probably going to use something from the excellent Savant since his music is (stunningly) licensed under Creative Commons! Another video. I'm really happy with how this is coming along now. WIP Video 3
20:00 Nice Indian meal OH WAIT JAM
22:10 Caved, got Fireworks back. Made title logo and will be concepting some stuff.

Sunday
01:15 Getting a shade sleepy but I've begun layering the game better. It'll have five "levels", though transitions will be relatively seamless between them, and finishing the fifth will loop you back to the second with warped difficulty. The game's a highscore-em-up!
02:20 Did some of the main menu now. Added links to my website as well as to purchase the Savant album the music is from.
13:58 Have begun doing the other levels. Ladders implemented and level cards going in now.
15:01 Finished Level 2 and what will probably be the final main menu. Also got level cards done. This is close to finished. New video! WIP Video 4
18:53 GAME IS COMPLETE! Uploading new video, screenies and etc just as soon as I've also done loading screen and icons

Lyssandra and the Amplegores by Allison James

0960_0200_ItchioHeader.png

A lab accident has caused an outburst of Amplegores, a mutated species consisting entirely of their own blood. You're Lyssandra, aka "Dog". Get in the GunCycle and manage the population!

The game contains 30 different weapons with defining characteristics, such as the ability to burn, drown, electrocute or poison foes. You can choose to play two gamemodes. Arcade Mode gives you a full clip of any of the guns at random - when you empty it, you get a new one at random. Or Challenge Mode sees how good you are with individual weapons by giving you infinite of that and 1-5 star target kill counts. There is also an Arsenal where you can read up short descriptions on each of the weapons you've encountered.

Music is by dtrx creations, sound effects are from multiple royalty-free sources. Everything else - all programming, graphics, font work, design etc is by me.

Lyssandra and the Amplegores was an entry into GMC Jam #9, where it came 6th.

madnessMADNESSmadness 2. Go through three levels of tiered difficulty, play through a specialist level where you can't turn back, or even endure a procedurally generated level, completely randomly made and unlooped for constantly different obstacles. And if you're bored of its looks, why not recolour it to suit your visual needs?

Ne Touchez Pas 4 by Allison James

0960_0200_ItchioHeader.png

Ne Touchez Pas IV, my entry into YoYo Games Competition 05 (no, I'm not particularly in it to win it, I just like entering this stuff ) is a game which builds off NTP3 in the pursuit of improvement.

All of the levels are the same, probably not a massively popular decision, but I'm trying to bring in improvements in other areas to make up for that.

For those unfamiliar with NTP, it is a game which compiles many variants of don't-touch-the-walls games (including two from my past - Rockit and NAL's Jet Pod).

There are 50 levels, playable with six separate characters:

Bird will be familiar to anyone that's played Messhof's Flywrench or any of the previous NTP games. New to NTP4, Bird has an autoflap button as well as a manual flap. Left/Right make the bird strafe, Z is for manual flap and Up for autoflap. Down can be used for the level start if you want to start with a freefall, not an upwards movement.
Jetpod is the only character unaltered from NTP3. It's basically a slower, easier version of the bird with smooth upward thrusting and strafing.
Missile is a redesigned version of NTP3's "Rockit". Since mouse controls are disallowed from Competition 05 entries I had to alter the controls. The D-pad now makes the missile hurtle in whichever direction is pressed. It's at one set speed and is unaffected by gravity.
Spaceman has been changed from NTP3 significantly. He's still unaffected by gravity and friction, but now the entire screen rotates as he does and you have to keep control of him and track of the level as it turns before you. Pretty good at inducing dizziness.
Vehicle, first of two new characters, is a small, speedy car in which you use up to accelerate, down to decelerate/reverse and left/right to turn. This is a fairly easy one to do since you can be patient with it and it's nippy and agile enough to get through the tightest of gaps.
Square is named to reflect its simplicity. Direction keys simply move it in whichever direction is pressed. It stops instantly when you let go. It's fairly slow (though holding Z will double its speed), but small enough to get through super-tight gaps. Designed to be similar to World's Hardest Game, though is much easier.

The menu system has been redesigned also. It's incomplete (if you play the build you can only access The Grid and Quit Game on the main menu) but getting there. What exists is pretty much fully functional. Controls for the menus are given so I needn't go in-depth into them.

Gamanstake by Allison James

0960_0200_ItchioHeader.png

Gamanstake is a very long maze / exploration / adventure game made in 2006. Until Elemence later on, this was my “prized” game. You play as a dude called Gea Mastert (an anagram of “Age Matters”, don’t know why) who has been trapped in an evil set of killer mazes called The Gamanstake Mazes. He must go through trying to find the source of evil.

If you persevere the boringness of the gameplay it does actually contain a fair bit of variety. An aeroplane stage, a racing stage, a mix of maze and platforming levels, a few different areas and a storyline bulk it out a lot. This was my longest game in terms of unique gameplay for quite a while!
