Gossamer Girls by Allison James

0960_0200_ItchioHeader.png

Kill spiders. Collect gossamer. Trip balls.

Gossamer Girls sees you, the newest member of the eponymous all-female taskforce, exploring ancient dungeons, untouched by humanity for generations and overrun by clusters of spiders that produce valuable gossamer.

Dungeons are procedurally generated, containing ever increasing quantities of spiders with escalating threat, and connected by falling sections in which you descend through dangerous but rewarding neon tunnels. Start off with a randomly generated character and upgrade her through chests found on floors and powerups found in the falls between, all the while collecting as much gossamer as you can, using some as ammunition to defeat threats.

Also features a dynamic soundtrack that fades tracks in and out for each floor and fall, because I'm an idiot and decided that a time-constrained game jam was the first time to experiment with it.

Created for #LOWREZJAM 2018.

Maddening Euphoria by Allison James

0960_0200_ItchioHeader.png

Ever feel like you're running around in circles?

Maddening Euphoria is a unique, challenging arcade game with randomly generated level design, in which you control brother and sister duet Mason and Millicent Zane as they flee from their own imagined realisation of their troubles in life - an inescapable wall of death - while avoiding bottomless pits, deadly spikes and speed-reducing pools of thick goo. Keep within spitting distance of the wall to receive a short, colourful Second Wind speed boost and gain the opportunity to be one eighth euphoric.

Not enough for you? Don your favourite fedora, go for eight pieces, and enter the multicoloured rainbow world of Euphoria where time goes even faster, spikes disappear and your survival speeds up dramatically. Or tackle some of the game's 150+ challenges ranging anywhere from trivially easy to borderline unfathomable.

Meanwhile, choose from 36 game themes (or throw it on Shuffle), each with themed poetry telling tales of your demise with anywhere from innocent whimsy to incomparable filth, and ranging from surprisingly clever to embarrassingly hideous. If you're English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, German, Spanish, Japanese, American, or from Bristol or Norwich like we are, I apologise profusely. Also have the game mock your failures in one of 51 ways of varying levels of Britishness. And all of this while other people's highscores pop up and you wonder what some people do with their time.

This is the flashiest, fleshiest Maddening to date. It even has some diamondy bits. And you can turn those off if you're only in it for the circles.

Just don't buy it if you suffer from epilepsy. (Please.)

Super Dynapogo by Allison James

0960_0200_ItchioHeader.png

Explosive pogo a-gogo!

The city of Dynaster is in ruins - an erupted volcano has flooded it with lava, and as a result, an evil government corporation has bought the land to level it into a hellish lava-moat-surrounded fortress.

But it's okay. You have a pogo stick. Not just any pogo stick, either: it's a Dynapogo! It has a stick of dynamite attached that remains intact when it explodes, allowing for infinite reuse. It explodes on contact with anything, so make sure you're pointed the way you want to go when you land!

Get as far as you can by exploding your way across the doomed Dynaster cityscape's rooftops. Watch as the final helpless and stranded Dynasterians are torn apart by the government's leveller, making sure you aren't killed by itself. And for the love of god, avoid the lava!

"I played the original Dynapogo. What's new?!"

Good question! This is an upgrade, not a sequel, so the core gameplay is the same. But Super Dynapogo has these upgrades on Dynapogo:

+ Game runs at 1080p and is fullscreen now - clearer graphics and no accidental clicking off-screen!
+ Game contains proper HUD elements - original was for a game jam with "no in-game text" as a restriction, so that's now rectified
+ HUD graphics have been polished
+ Everything's got a shadow now, because shadows are for cool people
+ Several new building types added, and tile variety added to new and previous buildings
+ Changed music

Hi, Japan. A futuristic city where the lights are so bright they dazzle the blind. In comes Me Ro Me, a thrill-seeking Russian looking to scale Hi's tallest building, a winding tower with a tough electric security scanner constantly rotating around its cylindrical outside. This year’s FKR takes the game back to the style of FKR2 while improving and tweaking the gameplay and adding and altering other stuff.

Swing your way through a computerful of antiviruses, kicking their asses and keeping some poor goon’s computer all broken and things. And no, it’s not really a virus!

EverScrollingTwo by Allison James

0960_0200_ItchioHeader.png

An improved, enhanced version of EverScrollingHue, with better music, more variety and is slightly more playable as it’s a bit dimmer. Bizarre game that most will see as eye candy, but is actually a not-bad arcade shooter. An enemy floats around shooting in as many directions as the wave number. You use your stream of bullets to take his down while killing him and protecting yourself.

Kill the enemy and he becomes stronger (and you get more points). Keep going until you run out of health, which is shown in large for a second or so when you get shot. Points at top. Controls shown in-game. And, of course, all displayed in lovely sprays of colour (where it gets its name – the hue of all the in-game stuff is constantly changing).

Infidels by Allison James

3D third person arcade shooter set in a wrestling ring. It's 2071, a year when being Ginger is a religion. Anti-Gingers are trying to kill you by any means. It's up to you to fend them off. Includes online highscores and more effort than I've put into a complete game in a long time.

Created for the GameJolt Shocking competition (the link - you use electroguns as your weapon to shock the enemies).

FKR3 by Allison James

0960_0200_ItchioHeader.png

The psychedelic sequel to a psychedelic swing-em-up! You play as a virus (not a real one, don’t worry) who must fend off antiviruses with a cluster of orbiting trojans. Plenty of improvements all around. Two more enemies, raising the total to six, and the game progresses quicker so more people will see them. As you progress, the game’s tint changes colour, from white to black to maroon to navy blue and ending on a weird mess of colours. I also learnt a new item for the game – writing with a font made from a sprite.
